I've lived in apartments in 6 cities (including 2 foreign countries). Does that make me an expert? As of now, my ceiling isn't leaking and I don't have rodents (knock on wood) -- so I'm going to say yes . . . but ask me again tomorrow:) These days, I'm enjoying life Chicago style, but my years in Brooklyn are never far from my mind. P.S. By day I work at Cars.com, but these opinions are totally, 100% my own.

Major Cities with Cheapest Rents!

New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston are without doubt terrific cities; but you’d be right foolish to believe that they’re the only American cities worth living in. With some rents in major metropolitan cities rising upwards of 10% this year, it might be time to consider certain other roads, or zip codes,…

While it’s true that some folks choose the wintry months to move into a new place, most of us prefer to haul sofas upstairs sans snow boots. There’s just something unappetizing about carrying boxes of delicate dishes along icy sidewalks. As such, for the most of us, we’ve been staring at the same apartment for…

Flooded Toilets and Ants, Oh My!

When my toilet flooded for the second time in a week yesterday morning at 6:00 A.M, I wanted to argue with it. I wanted to chastise it for being so thoughtless during the holidays. Didn’t it know that I was out late the night before altruistically looking for presents for others? I did not deserve…

What to do when you want to move but all your friends already have places? Share an apartment with a stranger? Eeek! Actually, it can be pretty great–if you know what you’re doing. While starting by asking friends if they have other friends looking is a good idea, none of mine did. So, I went…

If you were to ask me a year ago what a credit rating was, I would have mocked you for you watching too much late night TV. Maybe I would have told you to go buy a suit and on the way, pick me up some Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. After all, I was still living…

Think about every place you’ve ever lived; from your bunk bed at overnight camp many moons ago to your last college dorm room, there was something uniting about all your past abodes. And, even though living on your own for the first time might feel foreign, if not a bit terrifying, there are tricks to…

Why there is no such a thing as a perfect landlord

Unless your landlord is a bear, he probably did not make a cameo in Goldilocks’ memoirs. That said, the concept of “too much, too little,” tends to pop up when you are dealing with the person who takes a large chunk of your change on a monthly basis. What do I mean? Landlords are, invariably,…

No More Achoo! Getting Allergies Under Control

There are a lot of questions you could ask the ancient Egyptians about their construction of their famous pyramids. Most would probably involve geometry and physics, maybe even a side of human resources work ethic. All are sexier topics than what I’d ask them: didn’t you guys have allergies? Seriously, I’ve been unloading boxes for…
