I've lived in apartments in 6 cities (including 2 foreign countries). Does that make me an expert? As of now, my ceiling isn't leaking and I don't have rodents (knock on wood) -- so I'm going to say yes . . . but ask me again tomorrow:) These days, I'm enjoying life Chicago style, but my years in Brooklyn are never far from my mind. P.S. By day I work at Cars.com, but these opinions are totally, 100% my own.

How I Ended Up Using a Broker

Back when the economy wasn’t in shambles, I kinda understood why people used Brokers. Competition was fierce and landlords knew it. Consequently, any decent place was handed off to a Broker so he/she could screen applicants and send the cream of the crop to the landlord for a final review. It was a pretty hands-off…

It’s been a bit of a crazy apartment week. When I last wrote, I had realized that my future management company was full of scammers based on an almost too late Google search. As such, I didn’t want anything to do with them. But, I’d already given them a $700 which I know wanted back…

I just started apartment hunting and already nearly signed a bad lease. How close was it? I’d already put down the deposit. As Labor Day creeps up on us, I’m reminded of a post I wrote just after Memorial Day — about how my roommate wanted her unemployed, recovering alcoholic friend to move in. I was a bit freaked by her baggage, but mostly I had the initial gut reaction that I didn’t like her. Something about…
