Many apartment dwellers make the most out of a smaller space by choosing a compact bed. Although this approach is certainly great for freeing up apartment space, if you want to sleep comfortably, you shouldn’t choose a bed that’s too small.
There are several factors that come into play when choosing a bed that fits your apartment: your room’s dimensions, your sleeping preferences, your height, and more. Below, discover which bed size is best for your apartment according to your preferences.
Twin/Twin XL
If your bedroom is small and you need to save space, a twin size bed or twin extra-large bed can be your best option. Both twin and twin XL mattresses can fit a room that’s at least seven feet by 10 feet.
A standard twin size mattress is 38 inches by 75 inches. As such, in most cases, only one person can comfortably sleep on twin and twin extra-large mattresses. That’s why twin size mattresses are usually best suited for children and, occasionally, adults who are of at most average height.
A twin XL mattress measures 38 by 80 inches, five inches longer than a twin bed. Twin extra-large mattresses are often found in college dorms and, sometimes, small apartments. Given their extra length, if you are taller than average, a twin-extra large mattress will likely be long enough to support your body while saving space.
Full
Full-size mattresses, also known as double beds, can be the perfect option when you move into a new apartment with ample space. A full-size bed can fit a room that is at least 10 feet by 12 feet. The standard full-size mattress measures 54 inches by 75 inches, spacious enough for one person or two smaller-bodied people to sleep comfortably. However, couples usually buy queen-size mattresses.
Queen
According to a study, half of Americans sleep on queen mattresses. In a bedroom that’s approximately 10 feet by 14 feet, a queen size mattress can offer plenty of room for most people. It’s an ideal option for a person who likes to stretch out or an average to larger-size couple.
King
If you have a large bedroom in your apartment or luxury rental, a king-size bed can provide plenty of room for optimal sleep. Although a king-size bed can, in theory, fit into a room that’s 10 feet by 12 feet just like a full mattress, you won’t have much room for other furniture.
Instead, you’ll likely need a bedroom that’s at least 13 feet by 13 feet to fit a king-size bed and additional furniture. If you sleep alone, king beds might be too big since a standard king bed typically measures 76 inches by 80 inches – certainly more space than one person needs.
If you’re tall and want a big bed for your apartment, another great option can be a California king. A California king mattress is 72 inches by 84 inches, making it four inches longer than a standard king bed but four inches narrower. Whether you choose a king-size bed or a California king bed, you will surely have ample room to stretch and roll around.
