Creative Places to Find Your Next Roommate

Looking for a new roommate, but not having any luck? Never fear! There are plenty of creative places to meet the perfect roommate for you, without too much stress or panic! Like most things, finding a roommate will require you to put yourself out there and meet new people and make new friends. Don’t be afraid to start conversation (a quick compliment is a great place to start!) to get to know people with similar interests to you. Even if you end up with a different roommate, this is a great way to solve the dilemma of how to make new friends in your 20’s!

Keep your ears open at work to see if your coworkers or their friends are looking for a new roommate! While being thoughtful before deciding to live with a coworker you work closely with, your office can be a great place to find someone to live with. Don’t over-share, but let your favorite coworkers  know you’re looking for a new roommate and ask them to let you know if they hear of anyone. The receptionist is often a great person to ask, because everyone passes by their desk dayly and many stop by for a quick chat. Even older or married coworkers may have friends or family looking for a roommate, so don’t count them out!

Hobbies / favorite hangouts

Start paying attention and being friendly when at your hobbies or favorite hangouts! Always go to the same coffee shop to work on your side hustle. Enjoy kayaking or hiking? If you start to see the same people there over and over, strike up a conversation with them! You already know they share some of your interests… and they or their friends could make a great roommate.

Spend a lot of time getting fit? You’re not alone! Once you’re in your gym routine, keep an eye out for people who look friendly. Again, start making conversation or introduce yourself! If yoga is your thing, waiting for a lesson to start is a perfect time for a quick hello. Don’t take too much of their time, but working out together can be a great way to get to know someone while getting healthy!

Friends of friends

This is your goldmine for finding a perfect roommate! Let your friends know that you’re looking for a new roommate in person or via messages and ask them politely to let you know if any of their friends are also looking for a roommate. This is a great way to find someone trustworthy, since your friend already knows them. Be sure to thank your friend if it works out!

Online groups

Consider joining local groups online that align to your interests,  lifestyles you live, associations you belong to, or products you use. Again, you’ll find yourself in a group with like-minded people… and you’d bet that at least one of them is looking for someone to live with! Confirm the group rules, then post in the forum asking about roommates. Be sure to vet any replies extra carefully!

Finding the perfect person to move in with does take some work, but the more people you interact with, the better your chances. Take time to be friendly at your usual spots and you’ll probably not only find your new roommate, but some new friends as well.
