While your first apartment may be your favorite “home” ever, it can be hard to really make it feel like home! When moving in, it’s easy to take hand-me-downs and discount options to make decorating affordable, but it often leaves you in an apartment that feels a little less than “homey.” However, it’s not hard to spruce up your apartment with quick and cheap upgrades that make your apartment cozy!
Think over the things that remind you of home, whether it’s scents, light, textures…and start to bring them into your own apartment! This is an easy and fun exercise to help you understand what makes you feel cozy and comfortable.
Here are a few ideas to make your apartment feel more like home:
- Use lamps instead of harsh overhead light
- Find discounted area rugs to warm up cold tile or laminate
- Light candles for no reason (remember to blow them out!)
- Hang art or set out photos of friends and family
- Bring the outdoors in with hardy houseplants
Bedroom:
- Replace your bedding with new sheets and comforter/duvet/quilt to feel luxurious
- Add a cozy quilt to your bed
- Find a pre-owned headboard and footboard that you love
- Keep your space vacuumed and tidy as much as possible to limit clutter
- Display important mementos close by, placed on your dresser or shelving (just remember to dust!)
- Rotate old or dingy towels for new fluffy ones (that you can purchase one-at-a-time)
- Add bathmats to keep your feet from getting cold
- Find coordinating bathroom accessories (trash can, toothbrush holder, hand towels)
- Invest in personal care items like face wash and lotion to feel pampered
Kitchen:
- Cook at home more often instead of ordering takeout
- Buy dishtowels that make you happy
- Bake cookies (store-bought dough is fine!) once a month
- Wipe down your counter tops with good-smelling cleaning product
- Brew coffee in the morning instead of picking it up on the way to work
- Eat dinner at a table instead of on the sofa (if possible!)
- Invest in a few throw blankets for your sofa and living room
- Shut the blinds when you get home to limit outdoor viewing
- Invite friends and family over to share your new space
It’s the little things that start to make a big difference! What other tips do you have to make your new space feel cozy and homey? Let us know in the comments!
