Homemade Summer Eats and Treats

When summer comes around, you can practically smell it in the air. The sweetness of ice cream, the decadence of friend pastries, and the smokiness of BBQ’s grilling your favorite foods. It seems like as an apartment renter, the only way to get a taste of these wonderful summer flavors is to visit someone’s home or go to a store. Fortunately, that isn’t true. If you have a craving for a juicy grilled burger, a creamsicle, or funnel cake, you don’t have to look any further than your kitchen if you have these tools to help you out!

Grilled Eats

Grill ChristaHamburgers, hot dogs, and ribs are the staples of summer grub. There are other ways to cook them, but the most flavorful is grilling by far. It would be ludicrous (and illegal) for you to put a grill in your apartment. Not to mention, extremely dangerous. So here are some alternatives you can pick up at your local big box store or order online.

Grill Pan – These work wonders for anything you want to grill; meat, fish, poultry, veggies, even fruit (grilled peaches and ice cream? yum!) If you get a good grill pan, you can easily recreate the tastiness and grill marks of BBQ food. This is a stove top device so you won’t get a smoky charcoal taste, but as long as you season your food correctly your summer eats are only a click away.

Mini Grill – If you are fortunate enough to have a patio attached to your apartment, this nifty device can easily cure your grilling withdrawal.  The mini grills measure between 13 and 20 inches so they’re really easy to store away and fit on any small outdoor area. This device can give your food that charred, smoky BBQ taste you love so much with ease. They come in charcoal, gas, and propane versions so you would have to buy the fuel separately, as with any outdoor grill. Can someone say, BBQ Party?!

Caution: Before you fire your grill up, check the local fire ordinances and your building’s regulations.  They may not allow any open fire and you don’t want a hefty fine, or even worse,  the arrival of your local fire department, to spoil your party.

Cool Snacks

popsicles ChristaWhen the summer heats up, your first impulse is to cool down. What better way to do that than to indulge in your favorite cold treat? Sure, there are ice cream shops and Popsicle stands around during the summer. But why go searching for it when you can make your own at home?

Popsicle Makers – Popsicle makers come in all shapes and forms. One of the easiest and most portable is the plastic disposable molds. For example, the Zipzicle is great for making sweet treats you can take with you on the go without a melting mess. All you have to do is blend together your favorite fruit and juice (or other combinations), pour into the popsicle wrappers, freeze, and enjoy. How simple, delicious and healthy is that?!

Fried Treats

As much as we love grilled food and cold snacks, fried treats during the summer are irresistible. Whenever you go to a festival or amusement park you’re bound to see stands for donuts, funnel cakes, churros, and deep fried anything you can think of. If you find yourself getting a hankering for one of these delectable treats but there’s no festival in town, you can definitely make them on your own.

Deep Frying Pan/Mini Fryer – If you are the owner of a deep frying pan, congrats! You’re half way there. All you need to do is find a good batter recipe for batter, follow the instructions, and fry away. Donuts and funnel cakes are the easiest to accomplish with a deep frying pan. If you really want to go all out, invest in a mini fryer. This miniature frying device can help you deep fry anything your stomach desires. Oreos, Twinkies, candy bars, pickles; the sky’s the limit! As with anything dealing with the excessive use of oil, the cleanup might be a bit tedious. But if these are your favorite summer snacks, it’s absolutely worth it. The best part, they’re apartment friendly! Just make sure you keep close watch over anything you’re frying and unplug the fryer as soon as you’re done with it.

If you’re on a budget, far from places to get summer foods, or just crave those things more frequently than most; these solutions are definitely for you.  Just because you live in an apartment, doesn’t mean you can’t create and enjoy the simple pleasures that come with the summertime. You can’t make it to your parent’s house? Grill some BBQ chicken. There’s only one festival and its two months away? Fry up some powdered donut holes and chow down. No matter what road block is in your way, these tips can make the summer much sweeter.
