Can You BBQ Legally In/Around Your Apt?
Such nice weather this weekend! Makes me nostalgic for my summer dinners with my family, which often involved, my dad’s prized Weber Grill.
I don’t have a balcony, but I do have one nifty fire escape. Which got me thinking, can I buy a grill?
Check out the exact the laws of the NYC land below and be sure to check out your city’s fire department rules for BBQ as rules do vary.
- “Never use a propane barbecue grill on a balcony, terrace or roof. It is both dangerous and illegal.
- Propane barbecue grills and no more than two (2) 20-pound propane tanks are allowed on the grounds of a one or two-family home, but be sure to follow the fire safety precautions below.
- Only use a charcoal barbecue grill on a balcony or terrace if there is a ten foot clearance from the building and there is an immediate source of water (garden hose or four (4) gallon pail of water). Otherwise, such barbecuing is dangerous and illegal.”
It would be super convenient to BBQ on the fire escape, but I suppose I can see why the FDNY is so against that. At least I live fairly close to a park with BBQ pits.
So, game over for me — but maybe not for you, if you’re lucky enough to have a regulation balcony/terrace. Or if you are living in a garden apartment with a backyard. They are rare in NYC, but you could easily find such apartments in many cities. If so, there are few more BBQ tips you should consider, especially as more than 500 fires and 20 injuries occur every year from gas grill fires and explosions of grills that have not been used for several months.
FDNY has a host of tips for propane, coal, and electric grills — be sure to check them out, especially before you use a grill for the first time this season.
