In all honestly Alissa, who do you know that owns a dog that can actually spend less than 4 hours away from it during a day, and not feel they are neglecting them?

The truth of the matter is that MANY single people with full-time & part-time jobs own dogs. And they aren't neglecting their animals as a result of this. I myself own a shih tzu and she is 4 mo. I work full-time and I'm in law school part-time in the evenings. I walk her early in the morning when I get up and after work before I go to class. I have my bathroom set up as a play pin during the day so she doesn't get injured while unattended. And I have spoken to other dog owners and even the breeder I bought her from, and they all assured me that this was an acceptable method to follow. I also have friends with dogs and eventhough most are small or toy dogs which don't require alot of outdoor activities, they all use similar methods of making things work out, b/c everyone works. Owning a dog requires you to work b/c after all you have to pay for the little ones so you have to. I honestly think most of them are in heaven with the right amount of toys and food to get them through the day. And whenever you have a moment to devote just to them, just play, play, play, until they fall out and you will have yourself one healthy, happy pup, in my honest opinion!

I think if you owned a dog you would learn to adjust and make him or her very happy. Go with your own instincts and if you want to get a dog, get one and work it out.
